Idhar Udhar Exclusive: Why 60% Brazilians are against the FIFA World Cup?

The shape which protests have taken place in Brazil just ahead of the start of FIFA World Cup, is not only a worrying issue but President Dilma Rousseff has also taken a big political risk by showing strictness against the protestors. If this protest doesn't stop in future then she could find herself in opposition after the forthcoming polls in October.

Notably, 27 people have lost their lives in the protests in the last one year. When Brazil got the rights of hosting the one of the biggest events of the sporting world, it was seen as a national pride but today, 6 out of 10 people are against the Football World Cup.  The protestors have shown their strength also by making protest successful in Sao Paulo on Thursday.

From the angle of economy, this protest is the result of neglecting the poor people and their regression in social circle. Earlier, it was told that private capital will be invested in the construction of stadiums and other basic infrastructure facilities. Not only the hard earning money of taxpayer is being spent in these construction works, but heavy corruption also taken place and construction work also not completed on time. This whole episode is very much similar to the Common Wealth Games(CWG) hosted by India in 2010. As whole focus is on World Cup, no attention has been paid to the traffic system.

This current condition of Brazil is actually due to its dual economic policy also. With the help of liberal economic policy, it has increased its per capita income, but at the same time Brazil is desperate to save its market by imposing heavy import duty. The price of essential commodities is on sky due to the emergence of large number of middle class people. The 16% poor population seeks social welfare schemes, free transportation service and free residence. This whole preparation of World Cup is like an unnecessary expenditure for the lower class of Brazil.

World Cup football is not only the question of Brazil image, but also an emotional moment for the Pele generation after the 64 years. But young generation believes in reality, not in emotions. Thus, to save this event from the hurdles and protests, the policy makers will have to make a balance in their policies.
