This day that year: Gibbs dropped a World Cup

One cricketer would never like to remember this day of cricket history. That drop catch became so famous that whenever you type the name of that person in google search, google itself complete the whole sentence with drop catch.

Yes, we are talking about the World Cup's super six game between Australia and England which was played on the same day 15-year back in England. South Africa was on top before that drop catch but World Cup was also dropped from Proteas hands with that drop catch. No one could have imagined that Herscehlle Gibbs, who was recognised as one of the best fielders of world cricket, could make such a big blunder.

But he himself will never be able to forget that drop catch. Australia was on back foot while chasing 272 runs as they were three down on just 48 runs. Skipper Steve Waugh was on crease along with Ricky Ponting. When score was 152-run, Steve has played a shot off Lance Klusenser towards mid-wicket which went straight into the hands of Gibbs. He was throwing the ball in the air to show his happiness but ball got slipped from his hands.

Everyone was stunned with that drop catch by Gibbs. Commentators were also not able to trust this and Captain Waugh was laughing on Gibbs as he later fully encashed that drop catch and played an unbeatable knock of 120-run. He won the match single handedly for Aussies.

After the end of Klusener's over, Waugh had asked Gibbs by making a warp on him 'Is catch drop looking like dropping the World Cup to you'?

The semifinal between Australia and South Africa ended at tie but Australia reached the final due to their win over Proteas in that super six match. South Africa has never won a knockout match in ICC tournament and they have the tag of chokers due to their ability of performing miserably at the big stage.
