The quarter final of FIFA World
Cup between Argentina and England was played on 22 June 1986 in Mexico City.
The match was played four years after the Falklands
War between Argentina and the England and was a main part in
the already extreme football rivalry between both countries. It was also a contest
which included two of the most famous goals ever in the history of football,
both scored by Diego Maradona.
His
first, after 51 minutes, was the Hand
of God goal, in which
Maradona smashed a goal by using his hand. His second, after 54 minutes, saw
him trickle past five England players, Beardsley, Reid, Butcher, Fenwick,
Butcher (again), and finally goalkeeper Peter Shilton. In 2002 this was voted Goal of the Century by FIFA.com voters. Argentina won the match
by 2–1 and eventually win the 1986 World Cup with a win over West Germany in the final.
Maradona was awarded with the golden ball for
player of the tournament. Gary Lineker got the golden shoe award
for being the top goal scorer in the tournament.
