Economic affairs ministerial committee of Manmohan Singh government had decided
to hike gas prices from 4.2$/MBTU to 8$/MBTU in June 2012 and UPA government
faced severe criticism for this decision. Gujarat government was very much
outspoken in crticism. While condemning the decision, the Gujarat government had
said that central government has imposed economic burden on the people of state
and country by doubling the gas price. Saurabh Patel., Minister of Power in
Gujarat, had claimed that Gujarat people will face extra burden of Rs. 9495
crore due to the hike in gas prices. In such a scenario, the impact of rise in
gas prices on the whole nation can be easily
estimated.
Now in June 2014, Modi-led NDA government has taken the charge of country. Modi government is going to implement the decision of rise in gas prices and it is anticipated that new prices will be applicable from 1st July onwards. Saurabh Patel is silent now and no one is talking about the impact on aam aadmi(common people) due to the increasing prices of gas. The compulsion of remain in the power and challenge of managing the financial resources in a weak economy has changed the situation for BJP and its allies. Now, no one in BJP is talking about the review of gas prices. While, Law and Telecommunication Minister Ravishankar Prasad had promised the review in the prices of gas. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had also promised the same thing. Other than this, BJP government had said that they will implement the report of Yashwant Sinha-led Standing Committee. The committee had asked to review the suggestions made by Rangrajan formula immediately.
The probable notification related to rise in gas prices on 1st July will impact the power and fertilizer sector most. The farmers and consumers will have to pay more for consuming these things. Industrial consumers will have to pay 1-2$/MBTU more. The common consumers will also be influenced badly from this anti people move by Modi government. The consumers will have to pay more for power, CNG and PNG. The Ministry of Power has opposed the rise in gas prices several times. The ministry has said that they are not in favor of more than 5$/MBTU price of gas. Dollar has become very weak after June 2013 due to which the rise of even 1$ in gas prices will increase the power price by 70 paise-Rs. 1 per unit. CNG vehicle users will have to pay Rs 8-9 per KG more. Whereas, the PNG will become costlier by Rs. 1.5-2 per standard cubic meter. The cost of companies associated with Gail India and Petrochemical, LPG business will be increased. The big impact of hike in gas prices will be on fertilizer subsidy as well.
