Why BJP creating unnecessary drama and controversy on PMO's twitter handle?

The beauty of democracy is that power replacement is very easy. Old one's resignation, new one takes oath, that's it. Though little of things in behavior remains there. The controversy of Prime Minister office's twitter handle is also a small thing, which has unnecessary taken a big shape. No one could even think two days before that controversy can be created on such account as well but creating new drama and controversy has become the habit of BJP. PMO has tweeted 4506 tweets and hardly there is any such tweet which was even discussed. Especially, at that time when Shashi Tharoor's tweet was not only discussed but controversy also created regarding his tweets.. Sushma Swaraj, Digvijaya Singh, Omar Abdulla, Nirmala Sitaraman and Muqhtar Abbas Naqvi's tweets remained in focus constantly. News were getting published on the basis of their tweets. But I don't remember if any such news was published on that basis of PMO's tweet. PMO's most of the tweets were like formal government press release and boring Bharat Nirman ads.

Though, PMO's account has 12.5 lakh followers. Now, when PMO officers have archived all the tweets of PMO handle, BJP's objection is only due to those 12.5 lakh followers. BJP wants that when PM Narendra Modi takes oath, he gets all these 12.5 lakh followers. Modi has to create new account and will have to gain new followers due the the archive of Manmohan Singh's tweets. It doesn't seems to be difficult by seeing the popularity of Modi. There was hardly many of those followers followed PMO account on twitter due to the personal popularity of MMS. Tweets was also not that important and interesting that everyone would have been waiting eagerly for PMO's tweets.

Most of the people are following that account because PMO office is the most important office of the country and its policies impact the whole nation. So Undoubtedly, all those people are going to follow the new PMO's twitter handle as well. Expectation is that follower count of Modi's PMO account will be much higher than MMS due to various reasons. Social media is getting expanding quickly in a country and people will be more keen to know the policies of new Prime Minister. Modi's popularity will also attract large number of people, The large section of Modi's supporters and fans is already very much active on social media. That's why, this is not that a large issue on which controversy should have been created.

Problem would have been created if PMO's current account was taken over by Modi and MMS profile pic was replaced by Modi's pic. All the twitter and facebook users very well know the meaning of changing the profile pic. Once the profile pic gets changes, it automatically get fixed in all the new and old activities. That means, all the old statement of Manmohan Singh also would have been seen with Modi's pic. BJP and Modi himself perhaps would also not want this.

Two things are very important to maintain decency when old PM is packing his bag and new one is one the way of PMO. First, the tradition of power replacement and second one is the policies related to it. But, both these things are not getting applicable in this matter of social media. When Manmohan Singh took oath as a PM in 2004, Twitter was not even born and facebook was the new born baby of few months. Probably, it's use was not even started in India. This is the first power replacement after social media's arrival. This is the time of creating new traditions. Any controversy created in hurry would only harm the process of forming new tradition. Despite forcing the issue of cyber world's business and employment, policies related to social media is not in the prime agenda of our governments.

Nothing like that such problem was not faced earlier anywhere in the world. Many controversies have been created all aroud the world that who is the real owner of social media account. First controversy was created three years back, when American company Fold Aug's employee who did tweets for company, continued the use of that account even after leaving the job. Company had no option left as former employee had all the info of twitter account's username and password. Similar matter is related to CNN journo Rick Senshej, who used twitter by adding CNN name after his profile name. He had more than 1.5 lakh followers. He carried on the use of that account after leaving the job also by just removing CNN name from his profile name. When such matters went to court, many countries had to  form new policies and laws, but no such thing happened in India.

Similar to India, this problem was faced by Britain and Russia also. When David Cameron became the Prime Minister, Britain's PMO also did the same thing as India's PMO has done. Old account was cornered and new PM got new account. However, Cameron has also created his personal account to avoid any controversy and problem in future. Russia also faced the similar problem when Dmitry Medvedev became President in place of Vladimir Putin. Such problem was faced even for Pop's twitter account. But no such controversy was seen in any of these cases. India is probably the first country to create controversy on new PM's twitter account
